Hallstatt hotels: village or around the lake?

In the village you sleep in old houses between the lake and the rock face. The centre is car-free, so you do not drive up to your door. Around the lake you find more choice, easier parking and the starting points for the Dachstein and the Gosausee.

This page does not give room prices, because they change by date and hotel. It tells you what each location is like and what to ask the hotel before you travel. A night in the village is the best way to see it without the day crowds, who usually arrive between 10 am and 1 pm.

Staying in the village

You sleep inside the picture, and you pay for it in convenience.

Seehotel Grüner Baum

A four-star superior boutique hotel at Marktplatz 104, on the historic market square. Check-in is from 3 pm. It is one example; other guesthouses and apartments exist, and availability varies by season.

Arriving by car

Barriers close the historic centre to visitors' cars, including those of hotel guests. You park at P1 and take the hotel shuttle, which runs daily from 9 am to 7 pm. Luggage travels by shuttle. Ask the hotel how to arrange the parking ticket.

What to expect

Quiet evenings, early light on the lake and the Skywalk before the first coaches. The lanes are residential, so keep your voice down late at night and stay off private ground.

Around the lake

More space, easier access and a bus or train to the village.

Obertraun

At the south end of the lake, next to the Krippenstein cable car, with a station, a lake beach and a boat landing. The Lodge am Krippenstein is a mountain hut at the top station. Obertraun also has paid motorhome pitches.

Bad Goisern

At the north end of the lake, with a station and the larger shops. The official village site recommends buying groceries here. The east shore path leads to Hallstatt and Obertraun in about 3 hours in total.

Gosau

The Gosau valley, close to the Gosausee and the Gosaukamm cable car. Hotels here are a good base for hiking, and the ski area opens at Advent when snow allows (4 December 2026). Without a car, you change buses at Gosaumühle.

Gosausee guide →

Bad Ischl

The emperor's town, with the Kaiservilla, Café Zauner and a thermal spa. It is a hub for trains and buses, so it also works for Salzburg, St. Wolfgang and Hallstatt in the same week. The Grand Elisabeth is a hotel here run by the Zauner family.

Which base is right for you?

Pick the village if the point of your trip is Hallstatt itself, and you are happy to carry bags for the last stretch. Pick Obertraun if the Dachstein is the plan. Pick Gosau or Bad Goisern if you hike, and Bad Ischl if you want a town with restaurants and a wider choice of trains.

Book early for summer, for weekends and for Advent. Ask about parking, shuttle times and luggage before you arrive. Check the station and ferry timetable if you come by train, because replacement buses run between Attnang-Puchheim and Bad Ischl until 1 November 2026.

For the other seasons, see Hallstatt in winter.

Where to stay in Hallstatt: frequently asked questions

Is it worth staying overnight in Hallstatt?

Yes, if you can. The day visitors leave in the afternoon, and the village is calm in the evening and before 9 am. You also avoid the long journey from Salzburg or Vienna.

Can I drive to my hotel in Hallstatt?

Not into the centre. Barriers close it to visitors' cars. Guests park at P1 and use the hotel shuttle from 9 am to 7 pm. Ask your hotel for the details before you arrive.

Where is the best base without a car?

The village itself, or Obertraun, which has a station and a bus to the cable car. Bad Goisern and Bad Ischl also work by train, with the ferry for the last part.

Where should I stay for the Dachstein?

Obertraun. The cable car station is there, and the bus stop is directly in front of it. In winter the ski area runs from 19 December 2026 to 29 March 2027.

Are hotel prices in this guide?

No. Rates depend on the date and the hotel, and we do not list them. Check the hotel directly for the night you want.
