Hallstatt Skywalk at a glance

The Skywalk is a viewing platform in the Hallstatt high valley, roughly 350 metres above the village. It is 12 metres long and shaped like the point of a star, so it reaches out over the drop. From it you look down on the rooftops, the church and the Hallstätter See, with the Dachstein massif behind.

You get there on the Salzberg funicular. The old line was dismantled and the site stayed closed for about a year. The new funicular opened on 29 August 2026 after 362 days of construction, with cabins for 60 people, step-free boarding and a ride of around three minutes. Older articles that say the Skywalk is closed are out of date.

Skywalk or Welterbeblick: do not mix them up

The name "Welterbeblick" appears in guides for two different places.

Hallstatt Skywalk

Above the village, in the salt mine high valley. You reach it with the Salzberg funicular, whose valley station sits next to the car park P2. This page is about this one.

Welterbeblick at Krippenstein

A separate viewpoint near the top station of the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car in Obertraun, about five minutes on foot from the station. It has nothing to do with the funicular. See our Dachstein guide.

What to expect at the top

The upper station has a bistro called Weitblick 7000 with about 140 seats including the terrace, and the Rudolfsturm restaurant serves traditional Austrian food. A panorama lift leads to the Skywalk itself.

The funicular suits families and visitors with limited mobility, because boarding is step-free. Children under 4 ride free, and dogs are welcome with a muzzle in the cabin. The view depends on the weather, so check the sky over the lake before you buy tickets for a fixed time.

Plan about an hour for the Skywalk with the ride up and down. The municipality asks visitors not to fly drones over the village and suggests the Skywalk for pictures instead.

A walk from the Skywalk leads to the Hallstatt burial ground, the site that gave the Early Iron Age its name. From the Skywalk it is about 15 minutes on foot to the Knappenhaus, where the salt mine tours begin.

Getting to the funicular

The valley station is above the village, not in the pedestrian centre.

By car

The salt mine has no visitor car park of its own. P2, which is open in spring, summer and autumn, is right at the visitor centre, about one minute away. A full day costs roughly €18 to €20, depending on which official list you read. Spaces cannot be reserved. See parking in Hallstatt.

By train and ferry

Get off at Hallstatt station, take the ferry across the lake (€4 one way, cash only) and walk up to the valley station. Rail replacement buses run between Attnang-Puchheim and Bad Ischl until 1 November 2026. Details in getting to Hallstatt.

On foot

Walking up takes 50 minutes to an hour and is steep. We could not confirm whether the platform is open to walkers without a ticket, so ask at the valley station before you count on it.
