Parking in Hallstatt

Cars cannot enter the old centre of Hallstatt, so the car park you choose decides how far you walk. This guide covers all four lots, the fees and the contradiction in the official day rate.

Parking in Hallstatt: the short version

Visitors may not drive into the historic centre. Two barriers close it off, and that includes guests with a hotel or holiday flat in the centre. Cars go to one of four car parks, P1 to P4, run by a local parking management company.

P1 and P2 are the practical choices. They are close to the village and to the salt mine railway. P3 and P4 are further out, and there is no shuttle from them. Parking spaces cannot be reserved or pre-booked, so a full lot is a real possibility on busy days.

Hallstatt parking fees in 2026

Prices are in euros. The tariff below is the one on the municipality's parking page, checked on 19 October 2026.

DurationFee
Up to 15 minutesFree
1 hour€5
2 hours€9
3 to 4 hours€10
5 to 6 hours€12
7 to 12 hours€15
Day rate (from the 13th hour)€20
Lost ticket€40

The €18 or €20 contradiction

Two official sources disagree. The municipality's parking page lists a day rate of €20 and a lost ticket fee of €40. The regional tourism database lists €18 and €36 for P1 and P2, with slightly different hourly steps (5, 9, 10, 11 and 12). An older table there shows yet another set of prices.

We cannot tell which list the machine uses on your day. Plan for €18 to €20, and check the tariff on the pay machine before you leave the car. A stay of up to six hours costs €12 on the municipality's list, so a short visit is cheaper than a full day.

How to pay

You pay at the pay machine when you come back to your car. It takes cash, Maestro, Mastercard and Visa. Guests who stay overnight should ask their accommodation what applies to them.

Is there a shuttle?

Only for hotel guests. A shuttle bus runs daily from 9 am to 7 pm, but only from P1, and only for guests with a booked room in the centre. They receive a hotel ticket from the accommodation. The price is set by the operator, and we have not confirmed it.

Day visitors have no shuttle. From P1 or P2 you walk about 15 to 20 minutes. From P3 and P4 it is 40 minutes, and there is no shuttle there either. If you cannot walk that far, take the train and the ferry instead. Our guide to getting to Hallstatt explains how.

Camper vans may park only at the campsite near the petrol station and P1. In exceptional cases, a short stay on P3 is permitted. Obertraun has paid motorhome pitches.

Coach parking and bus slots

Tour coaches follow separate rules, which is why some guides wrongly talk about entry tickets for the village.

Slot system since 2020

Since 1 June 2020, a coach company must register and book an arrival and departure slot by credit card. The coach receives a QR-code ticket for the bus terminal.

Fees from May 2026

A coach slot costs €126. A bus that stays overnight pays a flat €63. Older prices on tourism sites (€80 per day, €45 per slot) are out of date.

Minimum stay

A coach may leave no earlier than 2 hours 20 minutes after arrival. Passengers get off at the bus terminal south of the tunnel at the entrance to the centre, which opens from 8 am. After 20 minutes the coach drives on to the P3 coach park.

Limits

Each company may book a maximum of three buses. Coaches with bike trailers may not enter. We found no official overall daily limit on visitors or coaches.

For you as an individual visitor this changes nothing: there is no entry fee and no timed ticket for the village. If you come on a coach tour, the operator has booked the slot.

Tips for a smoother arrival

Small decisions that save time.

Arrive before 9 am if you want a space on P1 or P2 and a quiet village. Coaches usually arrive between 10 am and 1 pm. Road works on the Seestraße are planned from 5 October 2026 to 25 June 2027, between Polreich and the war memorial, so allow a little extra time.

Hallstatt parking: frequently asked questions

How much does parking cost for a day in Hallstatt?

Around €18 to €20, depending on the source. The municipality's parking page lists €20, while the regional tourism database lists €18. Check the tariff on the pay machine. Up to six hours costs €12 on the municipality's list.

Can I reserve a parking space in Hallstatt?

No. Car parking cannot be reserved or pre-booked. Overnight guests should contact their accommodation. Only coach companies book slots, and for the bus terminal, not for parking spaces.

Which car park is best for Hallstatt?

P2 is closest to the salt mine funicular, and P1 is next to the village. Both are about 15 to 20 minutes on foot from the centre. P2 is not open in winter. P3 and P4 are 40 minutes from the centre, with no shuttle.

Is there a shuttle bus from the car parks?

Only for hotel guests with a booked room in the centre, from P1, daily 9 am to 7 pm. There is no shuttle for day visitors, and none from P3 or P4.

Can I drive into the centre if I have a hotel booking there?

No. Two barriers close the historic centre, and that also applies to hotel guests. They park at P1 and use the hotel shuttle, and luggage is transported with it.

Where do tour coaches stop?

At the bus terminal at the southern entrance to the centre. Passengers have 20 minutes to get on or off. Then the coach drives to P3 and returns for the departure.
