Hallstatt in Winter

Winter is a quieter season for sightseeing, but not everything runs. This guide lists what is open from November to March, which dates matter for 2026/27 and how winter compares with the other seasons.

Is Hallstatt worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you plan around the closed attractions. The village, the lake and the ferry are there all year, and the new funicular to the Skywalk and salt mine runs through the winter. The summer lines to the Dachstein caves, the Gosaukamm and the Schafberg stop on 1 November 2026.

Snow is never certain. The ski areas open on a date but only "when snow conditions allow", and the official sites say so. Check the weather and the lift status a day ahead, and bring warm clothes: the mine is about 8 °C all year.

Dachstein Krippenstein

The ski area runs daily from 19 December 2026 to 29 March 2027. It has a 9 kilometre valley run and about 30 kilometres of freeride variants. Lift times are around 9 am to 4 pm. Lift ticket prices for 2026/27 were not published when this was written.

Snowshoes to the 5fingers

In winter the 5fingers platform can be reached on snowshoes, and there are winter walking trails from the top station. Ask at the cable car about the route that day.

The caves

The official opening dates list the ice cave and the Mammoth Cave only for the summer season, which ends on 1 November 2026. We found no confirmation of winter tours, so assume they are closed and check first.

Gosau

The Dachstein West ski area in Gosau opens at Advent on 4 December 2026 if there is snow. The Gosau valley also hosts a mountain Christmas event.

Advent and Christmas around the lake

The Wolfgangsee Advent runs from 20 November to 20 December 2026, with Advent boats from Wednesday to Sunday between Strobl, St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen. The Schafberg railway runs Advent trips only as far as the Schafbergalm (1,364 m) and runs daily from 26 December to 3 January.

The Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl is closed in November except for 28 and 29 November. In December it opens only on Advent weekends and from 26 to 31 December. It is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm from 1 to 6 January. We could not verify a Christmas market in Hallstatt itself, so do not plan a trip around one without checking.

The planned renovation of the Seestraße in Hallstatt is scheduled from 5 October 2026 to 25 June 2027, so expect work on the lakeside road.

Best time to visit Hallstatt

There is no perfect month. The right one depends on what you want to see.

SeasonWhat is openCrowds and weather
Spring (April to June)Schafberg railway from 25 April, Krippenstein from 1 May, Mammoth Cave from 9 May (2026 dates)May and June are quieter than July and August; June is one of the wettest months
Summer (July and August)All lifts and cavesBusiest, especially at weekends; July is among the wettest months
Autumn (September and October)Most lifts until 1 November; Kaiservilla daily in OctoberQuieter than high summer; rain still common
Winter (November to March)Funicular and mine, village, ferry, Krippenstein skiing from 19 DecemberNo official crowd figures; snow is not guaranteed

The time of day matters as much as the month. Most coaches arrive between 10 am and 1 pm, and the village is calmer before 9 am and after 5 pm in every season. For the quietest experience, stay a night. See where to stay.

Rain falls in every month. The modelled climate data we found puts June and July as the wettest and February as the driest, but treat it as a rough guide. The weather matters most for the Skywalk and the Krippenstein, so book those last and check the forecast.
