Salzburg to Hallstatt: your options

Hallstatt is an easy day trip from Salzburg. The fastest public route is the train to Attnang-Puchheim, a change to the Salzkammergutbahn and the ferry across the lake. It takes about 2 hours 15 minutes in each direction. There is also a bus route via Bad Ischl, a drive of about 80 km, and a range of guided day tours.

The route you choose decides how much time you have in the village. Leaving Salzburg at around 7 am gets you to Hallstatt between roughly 9:15 and 9:30, before the coaches arrive. That is the quietest time to be there.

Salzburg to Hallstatt by train

The route most visitors use. It is simple, but it involves one change and a ferry.

Salzburg Hbf to Attnang-Puchheim

This leg takes about an hour on a train of the main western line.

Attnang-Puchheim to Hallstatt

A regional train on the Salzkammergutbahn takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to Hallstatt station. It runs towards Bad Ischl and Stainach-Irdning.

Ferry to the village

The station is on the eastern shore, so you cross the lake by ferry. It runs all year, almost hourly, and is timed to the trains. A single ticket costs €4 and a return €8 (2025 price list), cash only.

The total

About 2 hours 15 minutes, based on a secondary source. The partial times match official data, so the estimate is plausible. Check the ÖBB timetable for the exact connection.

Rail works until early November 2026

Until 1 November 2026, replacement buses run between Attnang-Puchheim and Steeg-Gosau or Bad Ischl. Between Gmunden and Bad Ischl the replacement service continues until 2 November. If you travel in that period, the train part of the journey is partly on a bus.

Allow extra time for the change, and do not plan a tight connection to the ferry. After the works are finished, the regular train service returns. The ferry is not affected and runs all year.

Salzburg to Hallstatt by bus

There is no direct bus. You travel in two stages.

Bus 150 to Bad Ischl

The bus leaves Salzburg Hbf at Südtiroler Platz and runs via Fuschl, St. Gilgen and Strobl to Bad Ischl. It reaches Fuschlsee in about 40 minutes and Strobl in about an hour. We have not confirmed the total time to Bad Ischl.

Bad Ischl to Hallstatt

From Bad Ischl take the train towards Hallstatt, then the ferry. Alternatively, take bus 541 or 542 towards Gosau, change at Gosaumühle to bus 543 and get off at Hallstatt Lahn on the southern edge of the village.

Stopovers

The Wolfgangsee is on the way. You change in Strobl for bus 546 to St. Wolfgang, which takes about 1 hour 30 to 40 minutes from Salzburg in total. Bad Ischl has the Kaiservilla and Café Zauner.

St. Wolfgang →

The bus makes sense if you want to combine Hallstatt with Bad Ischl or the Wolfgangsee. For a single day in Hallstatt, the train is faster.

Salzburg to Hallstatt by car

The distance is about 80 km, and the drive takes roughly 1 hour 15 minutes without traffic. Hallstatt does not allow visitors' cars in the centre. Two barriers close it off, so you park on P1 or P2 and walk 15 to 20 minutes in.

A day costs around €18 to €20, depending on the source, and spaces cannot be reserved. The salt mine recommends planning at least an hour to find a space, so go early. Our parking guide has the details of all four lots.

With a car you can easily add the Gosausee, about 30 minutes from Hallstatt. It is better kept for a second day, though.

Which option suits you?

A simple rule of thumb.

Take the train if you want the quickest option and your own pace. Take a tour if you prefer not to manage changes. Drive if you want to add Gosau or the Dachstein. Whichever you choose, leaving early gives you the village before the crowds.
