Is Hallstatt a realistic day trip from Vienna?
Yes, but it is a long day. Vienna is about 275 km from Hallstatt. By train and ferry, expect 4.5 to 5.5 hours in each direction, which adds up to 9 to 11 hours of travel before you have seen anything. By car it is around three hours each way.
Many visitors from Vienna therefore choose one of two things: a guided day tour, where someone else handles transport, or a night in the region. If you do go on your own for the day, plan to see the village and one more thing, not three.

Vienna to Hallstatt: train, car or tour?
The three ways to do it, side by side.
| Option | Travel time (one way) | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train and ferry | About 4.5 to 5.5 hours | Travelling without a car, flexible time in the village | Two changes, ferry timetable, rail works until early November 2026 |
| Car | Around 3 hours | Combining Hallstatt with stops, or a group | You park at P1 or P2 and walk 15 to 20 minutes. A day costs about €18 to €20 |
| Guided day tour | Depends on the tour | No planning, fixed return transport | Time in Hallstatt is set by the operator. Check the hours and what is included |
| Overnight stay | Same as train or car | Seeing the village in the quiet hours | Book early for summer. See where to stay |

Vienna to Hallstatt by train
The route is simple, and the long part is the changes.
Vienna Hbf to Attnang-Puchheim
Take a fast train on the western main line. Attnang-Puchheim is where you change to the Salzkammergutbahn.
Attnang-Puchheim to Hallstatt
A regional train runs towards Bad Ischl and Stainach-Irdning. Hallstatt station lies between Bad Goisern and Obertraun. Bad Ischl is about 50 to 60 minutes from Attnang-Puchheim.
Hallstatt station to the village
The station is on the opposite shore. A ferry crosses in about 10 to 15 minutes. A single ticket costs €4 and a return €8 (2025 price list), cash only.
Direct trains
Sources disagree on whether a direct train from Vienna to Bad Ischl or Bad Goisern runs daily. One source says a single direct train runs on certain days, mostly Wednesday to Sunday. Do not rely on it, and check the ÖBB timetable for your date.
Vienna to Bad Ischl takes about 3.5 hours, and trains with a change in Attnang-Puchheim run at least hourly. For ticket prices, look at the ÖBB website, where Sparschiene fares can be booked early.
Rail works until early November 2026
Until 1 November 2026, replacement buses run between Attnang-Puchheim and Steeg-Gosau or Bad Ischl. Between Gmunden and Bad Ischl the replacement service lasts until 2 November. This is the stretch you travel on to reach Hallstatt from Vienna.
Replacement buses mean different departure times and a longer trip. If you travel before the works end, leave extra time for the ferry connection and the return journey, and check ÖBB the evening before. After the works, the usual trains and ferry resume.
The ferry itself runs all year, so there is no seasonal limit on the last stretch. Our guide to getting to Hallstatt has the full picture.

Vienna to Hallstatt by car
Faster door to door, but Hallstatt does not allow cars in the centre.
Distance and time
About 275 km, around three hours without traffic. Plan for more on summer weekends and during holiday periods.
Parking
Visitors park at P1 or P2 and walk 15 to 20 minutes to the centre. Parking cannot be reserved. A full day costs around €18 to €20, depending on which official list you read. The salt mine recommends allowing at least an hour to find a space.
Parking in Hallstatt →Is a car worth it?
For a day trip, the drive is easier than two train changes. But you must find a space, walk, and drive three hours back. If you want to add Gosausee, the car helps, as the lake is about 30 minutes away.
What fits into one day
The village plus one major sight is realistic. The region's tourism site proposes both Skywalk and Krippenstein in one day, but its plan starts at 9 am in Hallstatt.

The village on foot
The market square, the Bone House, the museum and the postcard view.

Skywalk by funicular
About an hour at the top with a return funicular ticket. Salt mine adds about two hours.

Dachstein Krippenstein
5fingers needs at least 2.5 hours. With a cave, plan on four to six.
With nine to eleven hours of train travel, you cannot start at 9 am in Hallstatt. If you want both the salt mine and Krippenstein, stay a night. The funicular reopened on 29 August 2026 after about a year of construction.
